The eNotes Blog Sanitizing The Giver

Sanitizing The Giver On August 11, 2014, thousands of teens and their parents eagerly purchased tickets for the long-awaited film adaptation of Lois Lowrys 1994 Newbery Award-winning novel The Giver.   My teenaged son read it in junior high and loved it. I loved it too. Like Madelyn LEngles A Wrinkle in Time, Lowrys The Giver has a subterranean angst that readers can feel bubbling under their fingertips as pages are turned, a sense that no matter how calm this world is on the outside, something is irreparably wrong. Everyone complains when a beloved novel is turned into a film. This may be especially true of science fiction works, as   entirely new worlds depend on an individuals imagination formed from an authors words. When one person, a director, substitutes his own vision for that of countless personal interpretations, tempers flare. While most moviegoers understand the necessity of divergences from the original text, other alterations are harder to accept. For me, one of the first hmmmmmmmmmmmm moments in the film comes when Jonas is clearly not twelve (initially, eleven), as he is in the novel. He seems to be seventeen or eighteen.   In a novel/film about censorship, this made my Spidey-senses quiver. One   oft-repeated charges leveled against  The Giver is that its protagonist, and presumably, its audience, are too young for the novels challenging themes.   For example, [i]n 1994, The Giver was temporarily banned from classes by the Bonita Unified School District in LaVerne and San Dimas, California because four parents complained that violent and sexual passages were inappropriate for children. The following year, a parent in Franklin County, Kansas, challenged the book on the grounds that it is â€Å"concerned with murder, suicide, and the degradation of motherhood and adolescence.† The book was then removed from elementary libraries, but remained available to the teachers in the county.   Capitulate and make the c haracter older? DONE! Another element that was present in the film but of much more importance in the novel concerns bicycles. During the Ceremony, the Nines are presented with their bicycles, futuristic looking gizmos that will make younger audience members ooh-and-ahh. But thats all we get about the bikes in the movie. In the novel, bicycles are much more meaningful. It doesnt take a literature professor to recognize that bicycles equal a modicum of freedom and independence. That is not what is most important here, however. What should have been addressed is Jonass desire to teach Lily, his little sister, to ride before she is legally allowed (Jonas had been thinking already about teaching Lily Chapter 2).   This willingness to break rules offers some insight into his character.   And (spoiler alert!) when Jonas escapes from the Community with Gabe, he does so on a bicycle. There are other differences. There is a mark that a person must have on his or her wrist to become a Receiver; this is not a part of the novelannoying but acceptable. Additionally, Asher and Fiona have different jobs. Asher has been upgraded to Drone Pilot, a profession not possible in 1993. Okay, fine.   For her part, Fiona is a Nurturer in the film while in the novel she is a Caregiver for the elderly. Sure. Shrug. The role of Chief Elder, seems to have been expanded to justify what I presume to have been the enormous paycheck to get Meryl Streep to appear in this flick (in the novel, the Chief Elder is only involved in the Ceremonythats it.)   Jeff Bridges is basically The Dude in a nicer easy chair (was there a rug? Dude I hope so.)   Minor, liveable directorial choices. What I did not like was the sanitized ending. After Jonas makes the terrifying decision to rescue Gabe and leave behind the entire world he knows and loves, Lowry offers no guarantee that gray dystopia has been replaced by colorful utopia. In the novel, Gabe and Jonas travel for days, cold, hungry, exhausted, but they finally reach the top of the hill.   Filled with happiness, the pair glide toward what Jonas hopes is the new community. As he and Gabe descend, Jonas feels pangs of regret and thinks he may hear music coming from his old home: But perhaps it was only an echo. In short, although the reader thinks all may be well, there is no guarantee. In the film, as Jonas and Gabe speed downhill, the camera pulls back to show the old Community coming alive with color, and presumably, happiness, all memory restored. If this is the case, why wouldnt Jonas go home? Why not turn around and go back? Dont think about it too much, the film suggests. Happy ending achieved.

Four Ways to Beat the Feast and Famine Cycle (Without Burning Out)

Four Ways to Beat the Feast and Famine Cycle (Without Burning Out) Freelance writing is a balancing act. If you take on too much work, you burn out. If you take on too little work, you risk a crater-sized hole in your bank account. What counts as just enough work or just enough income varies from one freelance writer to another, but its easier to find that sweet spot in the middle when you: Pitch Often You dont have to pitch articles every day (though if that works for you, Take at Least One Light But Regular Gig The problem with high-paying assignments, like those from magazines and big-name corporations, is that theyre usually temporary. You need something to tide you over in-between these assignments, which is where the light-but-regular-gig comes in. (For starters, check out the gigs advertised at Blog Writers Wanted.) http://blogwriterswanted.com Think of this extra gig as a part-time job. It might pay lower than what youre comfortable with, but at least youll have pocket money. Besides, if the gig involves tasks like social media promotion and image editing, you can expand your existing skill set, which puts you in a good position to haggle for higher rates in the future. A word of warning, though: Dont stay too long in these kinds of jobs. You might fall into the habit of churning out only easy articles, leaving you with little time and energy to craft more difficult, more lucrative, pieces. If a better opportunity comes along, and the extra gig is becoming more of a burden than its worth, drop it as soon and as professionally as you can. Use the 45-15 Rule To better handle these tasks, create a schedule. You need time to pitch, time to write those $1-a-word assignments, and time for your extra gig. Sounds like a lot to squeeze into a day, right? Not if you allocate 15 minutes of rest for every 45 minutes of work. This method keeps your energy levels stable throughout the day, no matter how many hours you work. The 45-15 rule helps you accomplish and earn more, without sucking every last bit of energy out of you. Make It a Habit to Freewrite Freewriting may not be directly related to income, but it can spell the difference between five articles a month and five articles a week. Before you write any paid article, jot down as many ideas as you can about that article without opening Google and without stopping to check whether your ideas make any sense. Youll be surprised at what you can come up with, and how fast youll be able to write the final product. Feast and famine doesnt have to be your awkward bedfellow. With these tips, youll be on your way to a more fruitful and less stressful writing career.

Creating a sense of Communiy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Creating a sense of Communiy - Essay Example When it comes to African culture, a number of aspects arise due to the conservative nature (Halverson & Tirmizi, 2008). This is especially so when it comes to such aspects as religion, music, art, and beliefs that normally promote communal work through the sharing of items such as homes, natural resources, and wealth. Additionally, their music and literary work is meant to enhance cohesion, as it mainly focuses on building a strong bond among the Africans and beyond (Sizoo, 2010). Perhaps it is important to look at the Mexican culture that uses unique cuisines and architecture to unite those who belong or would like to be associated with the culture. Ordinarily, the Mexican culture emphasizes on romance and love through numerous and unique weddings (Doudna, 2004). While not all cultures promote harmonious stay among the people, it is worthy to note that the Jamaican culture focuses more on uniting its people by preaching peace through the reggae music among other things such as marijuana (Dhingra, 2007). This is important for cohesion and crime deterrence especially in the modern society. Overall, culture plays a very significant role in the identity of various communities and this further enhances cohesion among the members belonging to a particular cultural background (Halverson & Tirmizi,

What a Good Man Is According to Socrates Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

What a Good Man Is According to Socrates - Essay Example Since no one has ever experienced death, even if he was released on the condition that he stops his philosophy, Socrates would not accept such trade. His argument is that he relies on the truth that evil things do not happen to good people whether they are dead or alive and that God is not oblivious to the concerns (pragrata) of such a good person. â€Å"No evil can happen to a good man either living or dead... (p28)†. The fact that Socrates regards himself as a good man during the Apology is a contrast that Socrates poses to himself. In his earlier dialogue, Socrates believes that virtue cannot be claimed without moral knowledge, which he claims not to have. Without an in-depth understanding of claim by Socrates, it is easier to assume that the claims by Socrates would only be valid if he also believes that, to a certain extent, one can be good without necessarily having moral virtue. According to Socrates, and indeed with surety, he views the virtuous as good. However, the virtuous cannot claim goodness if they lack moral wisdom that is needed to have the virtue. Away from trying to pursue the true thing that Socrates has in mind with his claim, it is almost obvious for one to deny the claim of Socrates that he does not possess the virtue which he insists he is still seeking. ...the fact is that neither of us knows anything beautiful and good, but he thinks he does know when he doesnt, and I don't know and don't think I do: so I am wiser than he is by only this trifle, that what I do not know I don't think I do. (p. 26) At this point, Socrates admits that he has some wisdom slightly higher than the rest of his fellow human in Athens, a wisdom which is given by God.

South Africa Essay Example for Free

South Africa Essay In South Africa, civil disobedience was also strongly practiced. By simply looking back at South Africas history, it is indeed safe to say that civil disobedience is justifiable. Apartheid in South Africa is a fact, and is also a part of world history. Apartheid is the main reason why civil disobedience, also considered â€Å"passive resistance in South Africa, was practiced. Apartheid in South Africa was brought about by the settlement of the whites in the country. The term â€Å"separate development† was then used to categorize South Africans into three racial categories. These three categories included the Bantu, White and Colored. Bantu were the black Africans, White were the Americans and Colored were the people with mixed race. The laws under the apartheid system were harsh – black Africans were not allowed to own land even when they were the natives of the country. The members of the White had power over more than 80% of the total land area of South Africa even when the whites were a minority during that time. What makes civil disobedience justifiable in South Africa was when black Africans were not allowed to come in contact with other races. The prohibition of social contact brought about other social injustice like race-specific jobs, separation of education standards, restricted powers and participation in social events (Robinson, 1999). The role of civil disobedience in the given examples is to save people from extreme hardship. It functioned as the first step towards resistance to social injustice. Civil disobedience is then preferred by a lot of people all over the world because it is a form of peaceful rebellion. Given that some of the laws and platforms of a country are repressive and encouraging of violence, what kind of world will this world be if this is fought with armed rebellion? That said, civil disobedience is a step towards a fair revolution and a just society. References: Africa Action. (2006). Nonviolent Civil Disobedience Guide. Frank and Ritas Relationship Essay -- Educating Rita Relationships Es

Frank and Rita's Relationship At the start of the play, Frank and Rita can be seen as opposites; Frank is a middle aged academic, whilst Rita is a young, female hairdresser. Any friendship between the two seems unlikely, but they quickly warm to one another as first appearances show. They are both involved in unsatisfactory relationships, and they both want more from life than it seems to offer. The main difference between the characters are that, whereas Rita has recognised her unhappiness and is determined to change it through becoming educated, Frank is more negative and prefers to drown his sorrows in alcohol. Frank and Rita become friends because she needs him to teach her, and he needs the vitality and freshness that she brings to his life. Willy Russell presents Frank and Rita’s relationship, and the changes it goes through, in a variety of ways. The relationship starts off well when they meet each other in scene one and the contrast of personalities is shown very well, Frank leads the boring lifestyle, whereas Rita bursts in and is full of life- their personalities and characters are totally opposite. Frank could do with a bit of something different in his life and this is why he takes to her so warmly. I think that the reader comes under the impression that Frank may want something out of this relationship other than teaching his literary knowledge. RITA: This Forster, honest to God he doesn’t half get on my tits. FRANK: Good. You must show me the evidence. This quote shows that Frank likes to flirt with Rita and shows that literary knowledge is not all that is on his mind. Rita, however, just wants to learn and be good friends with Frank but nothing more. From Rita’s perspective fra... ... goes on to tell Rita how he has changed her and that he doesn’t like the change he sees. Frank in his own words then says that he can’t bare Rita anymore. Through the last few scenes both of them have changed considerably and Frank especially does not like the change that he sees in Rita and due to this he continues to argue with her. The most important thing is that education has given Rita choice. She now has a lot more freedom to what she wants, as she is educated, she can choose form a number of jobs, she can choose which type of people she wishes to socialise with an so on. I think that overall both of them have learned that sometimes times change and people change and In the end I think they both accept this as they get on good ground with each other. At the very end Rita gives Frank a hair cut that she has promised him since Act one scene one. Reaction Paper on Economic Forum on Philippine Governance Essay

Our country has great potential for mining developments. It was also mentioned by Dr. Habito that mining has contributed significant economic growth for the country. I am working in a mineral exploration company, and I have witness the mining investments flourished when the government made structural changes to the mining laws. More mineral exploration companies opened acquiring mining tenements and pouring in million of investments. Not only that, we generated employment and uplifted the lives of the local communities thru road developments and other rehabilitation programs where our mining area is situated. But as time goes by, the promises of the government were not fulfilled. Rampant â€Å"Red Tape† is still present every time we process exploration permits and other pertinent documents. The government bureaus still practices bribery for easier approval. Another important concern of my company and other exploration companies is the â€Å"Peace and Order† situation as the government promised to control 10 years ago. The situation has not been improved. Mining camps are still attacked by these belligerents/insurgents groups to threaten the mining companies to fulfill their wishes. The LGU’s of the particular community were not given full force to set directives in dealing with insurgencies. The local military always heed for directives from the national military to propagate security but then incidents have been done. As the same example mentioned by Dr. Habito, on over centralized agrarian policy, that the national government disposed fertilizers to national agrarian in belief that it was good for all farm lands of the country. But then some farmers on respective provinces don’t find this disposition as effective as the use of the Carabaos to mow and cultivate their farms. He pointed out there is a need to give stronger roles for LGU to direct the concerns of the local community. LGU’s knows more what is better for their community. Another good example discussed by Dr. Habito is the development of Clark Airport Tourism. The emergence of international flights in Clark Airport paved way to business expansion but fell short when the crab mentality of other â€Å"Airlines† instigated and aided from the government to minimized the international flights in Clark Airport to serve their self-interests. Dr. Habito instilled that the government should develop more liberal aviation policy and open skies environment to attract more investments. Subsequently, our company is moving our exploration activities to other Asian countries for better opportunity and effective government policies. We believed that our investments here in the country are not optimized due to these flaws and self-serving government operatives. Evidently, Philippines is rich in natural mineral resources that could bring great opportunities for the people. But we cannot maximize development because of poor governance. Even if the laws are severally revised for optimal purposes but they are just written instrument if these are not effectively realized.

Resolving Ethical Business Challenges

1. What are the potential ethical issues faced by ACME Corp? Frank from ACME corp. is leveraging his personal relationship and offering bribes and kickbacks to Otis of Thermocare to increase purchase contracts. This could potentially be a large problem if Thermocare becomes aware of such practices. The purchase of product should be warranted w/ quality of products and price structures, not because it gets you tickets to baseball games and Cancun. If ACME is competitive, there is nothing wrong with these kick-backs. If there is a better option for Thermocare, however, and Otis is choosing ACME for kickbacks alone, this becomes an ethical problem. If other customers of ACME or general public discovered these practices, they could damage their infrastructure thru lost revenue or hurt their public image. Related reading: Disadvantages of Ethics in the Workplace 2.What should ACME do if there is a desire to make ethics a part of its core organizational values? If ACME wanted to adapt Ethics as part of its core organizational values, they should start in the same approach as the structure of the business, top-down. Amber may be Frank’s boss but does business no more ethical than Frank does. Instead of warning of ethical issues, she re-enforces the practice of bribing the client. Therefore, Amber requires ethical training as much as Frank does. Her manager likely needs Ethical training as well as anyone up the chain. 3.Identify the ethical issues of which Frank needs to be aware. Frank needs to be aware of ethical issues of bribery. He should understand that his personal reputation as well as ACME’s is at risk when conducting business in this manner. Frank should start by asking himself if Thermocare would be as interested in ACME’s product if Otis was not able to squeeze kick-backs out of Frank and Amber. Frank should also be aware that Amber, despite being his manager, is as un-ethical as Frank is. She specifically tells Frank that no one will find out about the funding for season tickets as well as the trip to Cancun. 4.Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each decision that Frank could make. The easiest thing Frank could do is continue the bribery, say by funding Otis’s night at the Adult Entertainment venue. This would keep Otis happy and coming back for more kick-backs. Otis, Frank, Amber and the rest of ACME corp. would materialistically benefit from this continued business practice. It is unknown whether or not Thermocare is benefitting from this relationship. It is clear, however, that someone is paying for this. The disadvantage of continuing this bribery is clear. If the kick-backs become exposed to the rest of Thermocare, the client may terminate Otis and further sales with ACME Corp. If the rest of ACME Corp. found out about Amber and Frank’s methods, there would likely be disciplinary action. Additionally, if this matter became public, Frank and Amber could have jeopardized ACME’s reputation and severely hurt future sales with anyone.

11 Body Language Mistakes Youre Making in Your Interview

11 Body Language Mistakes Youre Making in Your Interview We’re all nervous going into job interviews. And a lot of times nervousness has a funny way of creeping into our body language in ways we don’t intend. Trouble is, interviewers aren’t nervous, so every body language faux pas is that much more glaring to them. Here are 11  body language mistakes  to watch out for when prepping for your interview.1. Lip bitingAn anxious habit that can be read as a sign of deceit or even as a sexual advance. Avoid!2. Rapid Head MovementThis is straight out of the established list of things to watch out for in liars. Try to keep your head still when being asked a question, and not move it immediately after.3. Mouth CoveringThis can convey your reluctance to answer the question. Try not to cover your mouth unless you sneeze or cough, at least while you’re in the hot seat.4. StiffnessAt the same time, try to avoid being too still. You’ll look a bit awkward, forced, or even as though you’re trying to overcompens ate for your dishonesty with your stillness. Act natural!5. PointingWe all gesture. And that’s fine- natural even. But pointing, especially directly or aggressively, is often considered rude or deflective.6. Covering UpIf you tend to cover vulnerable or sensitive body parts when you’re nervous, this is a habit to watch out for. Even if it’s natural to feel vulnerable, you should try not to show it too clearly. You don’t want to be perceived as having anything to hide.7. Unbalanced Eye ContactIt’s crucial to maintain an appropriate level of eye contact- not too much (weird) and not too little (untrustworthy/shady). Try to strike a natural balance and avoid extremes in either direction.8. MicroexpressionsIf you’re prone to these split second faces or minute little eye rolls, best to try and keep them in check, lest your interviewer notice and get the wrong idea.9. Fake SmilesBetter not to smile big and pretty if you can’t do it without appearing phony. If you can’t make your whole face look happy, not just your smile, then people will notice and assume you’re full of it. Be as genuine and positive as possible.10. Physical BarriersDon’t place physical blockades between you and your interviewer- i.e. your purse, a menu, your phone, your coat. Remain open. If you don’t, your interviewer might assume you’re trying to keep your distance for whatever reason.11. Shallow BreathsTry to keep your breathing calm and even. Heavy, shallow breaths are often credited as a typical behavior of liars. Don’t get lumped into that category just because of nerves!
